Sash Windows - The Basics
Sash windows are any windows that slide open instead of pivoting on a hinge. Most sash windows are vertical sliding sash windows although horizontal sliding configurations are sometimes available. Often associated with traditional architecture, sash windows are now a popular window choice with both modern and traditional properties.

Features of a sash window
Modern sash windows are designed to replicate the appearance of traditional timber sash windows with all the benefits of modern technology and performance. To do this, at Victorian Sliders®, we have incorporated a variety of different classic features into our sash window’s design:
- Georgian and astragal bars
- Run-through sash horns
- Authentic hardware options
- Realistic timber-effect finishes
- Traditional sash locks
- Bespoke shapes including bays and arches
Designed to recreate the appearance of sash windows from the Victorian era, our sliding sash windows are also suitable for properties from the Georgian and Edwardian periods, and the early 20th century.
How do sash windows work?
Sash windows work on one of two different systems: a weight and pulley system or a spring balance system. The weight and pulley system features a counterbalance that moves up or down when you open or close the window.
The spring balance opening system also works by counterbalancing the window’s opening and closing. Instead of using weights and pulleys, however, a PVC tube containing two springs sits inside the window frame. This spring balance system creates a counterbalancing effect that allows both sashes to slide smoothly open and closed.
At Victorian Sliders®, our ECOSlide® Vertical Sliding Sash Windows use spring balance opening. Spring balances are the more modern option. They are more durable than weights and pulley systems and are more compatible with our PVC-U sash windows.
